Weekend Wrap-Up: Monday, July 15th

MLB:

Cincinnati and Miami played a three-game series at Great American Ball Park over the weekend. On Friday, Cincinnati won 7-4, with rookie Rece Hinds hitting a grand slam home run and Jonathan India also homering for the Reds. On Saturday, Cincinnati triumphed 10-6, with Hinds hitting two homers and Elly De La Cruz, Jamier Candelario, and Santiago Espinal also homering for the Reds. On Sunday, Miami edged Cincinnati 3-2, with De La Cruz hitting a two-run homer for the Reds. At the All-Star break, Cincinnati stands at 47-50, 4th in the NL Central, eight games out of first place, and three games back in the wildcard race. The Reds will resume the season on Friday at 6:45 PM, starting a three-game series against the Washington Nationals in Washington, DC. SS Elly De La Cruz and RHP Hunter Greene will represent Cincinnati in the All-Star Game. Reds manager David Bell will serve as a coach for the National League under Arizona Diamondbacks manager Tory Lovullo. The All-Star Game is Tuesday in Arlington, Texas, at 8 PM, with live coverage on FOX-TV.

MLB Draft:

With the overall No. 2 pick, the Cincinnati Reds selected Wake Forest University RHP Chase Burns, the 2024 ACC Player of the Year who led all college pitchers with 191 strikeouts in 100 innings. Burns had 10 or more strikeouts in 12 of his 16 starts and six games with 14 or more strikeouts. University of Kentucky standout Ryan Waldschmidt was drafted in the first round, 31st overall, by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Teammate Emilien Pitre was taken in the second round, 58th overall, by the Tampa Bay Rays.

Harry Hall won the ISCO Championship at Keene Trace Golf Course in Nicholasville, KY.

Sunday NASCAR:

Ryan Blaney won the Cup Series race at Pocono Raceway in Pennsylvania.
