Sports Update: Wednesday, May 22nd

Tuesday High School Baseball:

In a game broadcast live on Somerset 106.1 FM and Somerset106.com, Griffin Loy hit a three-run homer and Reagan New added a three-run double to lead Somerset to a 10-3 victory over Pulaski County in the championship game of the 47th District tournament. Loy also pitched five innings of two-hit baseball with 10 strikeouts. Both teams will advance to the 12th Region tournament next week.

47th District Softball Championship Game:

The Pulaski County Lady Maroons defeated Casey County 4-1 to claim the 47th District championship.

48th District Baseball Championship Game:

Wayne County edged out Southwestern with a 4-3 victory in the 48th District baseball championship. Both teams will advance to next week’s 12th Region tournament.

48th District Softball Championship Game:

The Southwestern Lady Warriors shut out Wayne County 8-0 to win the 48th District softball championship. Both teams will advance to the 12th Region tournament.

Tuesday Cincinnati Reds:

The Reds opened a three-game series against the San Diego Padres at Great American Ball Park with a 2-0 win. Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott pitched seven innings, allowing just four hits and striking out two. Elly De La Cruz contributed an RBI for the Reds. Game two is scheduled for Wednesday night at 6:40 p.m., with RHP Nick Martinez (1-2, 4.23 ERA) starting for Cincinnati. Live coverage will begin at 6:10 p.m. on WTLO AM 1480/97.7 FM.

Kentucky Wildcats Baseball:

UK head coach Nick Mingione has been named the Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year for the second time in his eight-year tenure. Mingione previously received the award in 2017 when he was also named National Coach of the Year. This season, he led the Wildcats to a record 22 SEC wins and their second SEC Championship in school history. The Wildcats will open SEC Tournament play on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Hoover, Alabama, against LSU. Live coverage will be available on the SEC Network.
