Sports Update: Wednesday, July 31st

Tuesday MLB:

Santiago Espinal homered to help the Cincinnati Reds secure a 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs at Great American Ball Park. The series finale is set for Wednesday night at 7:10 PM, with LHP Nick Lodolo (8-3, 3.45 ERA) starting for the Reds. Live coverage will be available on WTLO AM 1480/97.7 FM.

The Reds made several trades before the MLB trade deadline. Relief pitcher Lucas Sims was traded to the Boston Red Sox for a minor league pitcher. Recently acquired OF Austin Slater and minor league infielder Livan Soto were dealt to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations and a player to be named later. Additionally, the Reds acquired infielder Paul Wendzel from the Texas Rangers for cash.

College Football:

Two UK Wildcat defenders, Jr. DL Deone Walker and Jr. DB Maxwell Hairston, have been named to the 2024 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List, which highlights the top defensive players in college football. Walker led the Cats in tackles for a loss with 12.5, quarterback sacks with 7.5, and quarterback hurries with 8. Hairston recorded 5 interceptions, including four in SEC play. Kentucky will kick off the 2024 campaign on Saturday, August 31 at home against Southern Miss, with a 7:45 PM kickoff.

WKU OL Quantavious Leslie has been named to the Preseason 2024 Outland Trophy watch list, recognizing standout interior linemen in college football. Leslie was on the list in 2022 and 2023. The Hilltoppers kickoff the 2024 regular season on Saturday, August 31st in Tuscaloosa against the Alabama Crimson Tide, with a 7:00 PM ET kickoff. Women’s College Basketball:

University of Kentucky women’s basketball graduate guard Jordan Obi and sophomore guard Dominika Paurova have both sustained lower leg injuries and will be out indefinitely. Obi averaged 13.7 points and 7.6 rebounds per game last season while at Penn. Paurova played last season at Oregon State, averaging 5.5 points and 2.1 rebounds per game.

Somerset 106 will broadcast live from Meet the Jumpers Night on the front lawn of Somerset High School. The broadcast crew of Jon Burlew and Tim Washam will anchor the coverage, featuring previews of the upcoming seasons from SHS fall sports coaches. TBT/The Basketball Tournament:

La Familia (UK alumni) will face Carmen’s Crew (Ohio State alumni) in the TBT Final Four in Philadelphia on Monday. Tipoff is at 9:00 PM, with live coverage on FS1.
