Sports Update: Tuesday, October 17th

In high school volleyball, the 47th District Tournament at Somerset High School saw the Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers securing a decisive 3-0 victory against Casey County, while the Pulaski County Lady Maroons triumphed over Rockcastle County with a score of 3-1. The championship game is scheduled for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., featuring Somerset (21-10) against Pulaski County (26-7).

At the 48th District Tournament at Southwestern High School, the Somerset Christian School Lady Cougars claimed a dominant 3-0 win over McCreary Central, while the Southwestern Lady Warriors secured a 4-1 victory against Wayne County. The championship game will be played on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., featuring Somerset Christian School (21-9) against the Southwestern Lady Warriors (14-18).

In MLB action on Monday, Game 2 of the American League Championship Series (ALCS) saw the Texas Rangers edging out the Houston Astros with a score of 5-4, further extending their series lead to 2-0. Game 3 of the ALCS is set for Wednesday night at 8:03 p.m. in Arlington, Texas, and will be broadcast on TBS.

In the National League Championship Series (NLCS), Game 1 featured the Philadelphia Phillies defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks with a score of 5-3, giving the Phillies a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 of the NLCS is scheduled for Wednesday night at 8:03 p.m. on FS1.

Monday night NFL action showcased the Dallas Cowboys prevailing over the Los Angeles Chargers with a score of 20-17.

Moving on to Tuesday’s college football action, the WKU Hilltoppers (4-2/2-0 CUSA) faced the Jacksonville State (Alabama) Gamecocks (5-2/3-1 CUSA). WKU led the overall series 4-1, with a decisive 45-7 home win in their last meeting in 2023. WKU entered the game off a 35-28 victory over Louisiana Tech on October 5th, while Jacksonville State had recently lost to Liberty with a score of 31-13 on October 10th. The Gamecocks are led by head coach Rich Rodriguez, formerly of West Virginia, Michigan, and Arizona, and are in his second season at Jacksonville State. In high school football action scheduled for this Friday, the Somerset Briar Jumpers (6-2) were set to take on the Leslie County Eagles (5-3) with a kickoff at 7:30 p.m. Live coverage would be available on Somerset 106.1 FM & Somerset106.com. Additionally, the Southwestern Warriors (5-3) were set to face the Pulaski County Maroons (3-6) with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
