Sports Update: Tuesday, January 23rd

In Monday’s high school basketball, Knox Central secured a 76-65 victory over Southwestern in the boys’ category.

In college basketball, Kentucky’s DJ Wagner was named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week. Wagner showcased an impressive performance, averaging 12.5 points and 6 assists per game in victories against Mississippi State and Georgia. Notably, he recorded his first double-double in the win over Georgia with 18 points and a career-high 10 assists.

On Tuesday, the No. 6 Kentucky Wildcats (14-3/4-1 SEC) were set to face the South Carolina Gamecocks (15-3/3-2 SEC) in Columbia, SC. Kentucky, coming off a 105-96 win over Georgia, looked to continue their success. The Gamecocks, having defeated the Arkansas Razorbacks in their last game, aimed to challenge the Wildcats. Although UK leads the overall series against South Carolina 54-14, the Gamecocks have won three of the past six meetings, including their most recent encounter. The tipoff was at 7 pm with live coverage on the SEC Network.

Thursday’s college basketball featured a matchup between the Florida International Panthers (7-12/2-2 CUSA) and the WKU Hilltoppers (13-6/2-3 CUSA). WKU, currently on a two-game losing streak, faced FIU, who suffered a 78-69 loss against Liberty. WKU led the series against FIU 27-10 but lost their last meeting. The game was broadcasted live on WTLO AM 1480/97.7 FM, starting at 7:30 pm ET, with the tipoff at 8 pm.

In women’s college basketball on Thursday, the Kentucky Wildcats (9-10/2-3 SEC) took on the Arkansas Razorbacks (14-5/2-2 SEC). The game tipped off at 8 pm ET and was broadcasted on SEC Network Plus.

Looking ahead to Friday’s high school basketball broadcasts, Pulaski Co. Lady Maroons played against Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers at 6 pm, followed by the Pulaski Co. boys facing Somerset Briar Jumpers at 7:45 pm. Both games were broadcasted live on Somerset 106.1 FM & Somerset106.com.

On Sunday, the NFL Conference Championships featured the AFC matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs (11-6) and the Baltimore Ravens (13-4) at 3 pm on CBS. The NFC clash was between the Detroit Lions (12-5) and the San Francisco 49ers (12-5) at 6:30 pm on FOX.
