Sports Update: Friday, February 2nd

In high school basketball action on Thursday, the Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers secured a 61-48 victory over Williamsburg, while the Pulaski County Lady Maroons triumphed over Barren Co. with a final score of 57-51.

Moving to college basketball, the WKU Hilltoppers faced a tough 79-77 loss at home against Sam Houston State on Thursday. Don McHenry led WKU with 21 points. Looking ahead, the Hilltoppers will go up against Middle Tennessee State (8-13/2-4 CUSA) this Saturday, with live coverage beginning at 7:30 pm ET, and the tipoff at 8 pm on WTLO AM 1480/97.7 FM, also broadcasted nationally on ESPNU.

In women’s college basketball, the Kentucky Wildcats suffered a close 77-74 overtime defeat against Mississippi State at Rupp Arena on Thursday. Maddie Scherr led UK with 19 points, 8 rebounds, and five assists. The Wildcats will face the Georgia Bulldogs (10-11/1-7 SEC) this Sunday at noon, with the game airing on SEC Network.

On Friday night, high school basketball featured the Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers (4-14) taking on the Southwestern Lady Warriors (14-6) with live coverage at 5:40 pm and tipoff at 6 pm. The boys’ game followed, featuring the Somerset Briar Jumpers (14-6) against the Southwestern Warriors (9-11), with tipoff at approximately 7:45 pm. Both games were broadcast live on Somerset 106.1 FM & Somerset106.com.

Saturday’s college basketball spotlighted a significant matchup between No. 5 Tennessee Volunteers (15-5/5-2 SEC) and No. 10 Kentucky Wildcats (15-5/5-3 SEC). Despite leading the overall series 160-77, UK was coming off an upset in their last game, a 94-91 overtime loss at home to the Florida Gators. Tennessee, too, had suffered a setback in their previous outing, a 63-59 loss in Knoxville to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The game tipped off at 8:30 pm, with live coverage on ESPN.
