Sports Update: Friday, February 23rd

In high school basketball action on Thursday, the Garrard Co. girls defeated the Somerset Lady Briar Jumpers with a score of 72-54, while the Southwestern Lady Warriors secured a victory against Mercer Co. with a score of 67-56. Additionally, Monroe Co. triumphed over Somerset Christian School with a score of 82-74, and the Southwestern boys also emerged victorious against Mercer Co. with a score of 54-40.

In women’s college basketball on Thursday, the Kentucky Wildcats staged a remarkable 19-0 run in the final six minutes to secure a 78-68 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs in Starkville, MS. Saniah Tyler led UK with 22 points, supported by Ajae Petty, who recorded her 15th double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. Maddie Scherr contributed 11 points, six assists, and six rebounds. Next up, the No. 1 South Carolina Gamecocks will face the Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena on Sunday, with tipoff scheduled for 3 p.m. and live coverage on SEC Network.

On Saturday in college basketball, the No. 13 Alabama Crimson Tide will take on the No. 17 Kentucky Wildcats at Rupp Arena. Despite UK leading the overall series 116-41, Alabama won the last matchup 78-52 in Tuscaloosa. The Wildcats come into the game following a last-second upset loss at LSU, while the Crimson Tide secured a 98-93 overtime victory against the No. 24 Florida Gators. Tipoff is set for 4 p.m. on CBS.

In another college basketball matchup on Saturday, the WKU Hilltoppers will face the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. This game marks the 146th all-time meeting between the two schools, with the Tops holding a 99-46 advantage. WKU previously defeated Middle Tennessee 88-65 on February 3rd.
