Somerset, KY– Joy Simpson, a dedicated student in the Practical Nursing Program at Somerset Community College (SCC), has been recognized as the Student of the Month for May by the Health Sciences Division. As a recipient of this prestigious award, she now stands as a candidate for the Division’s Student of the Year Award, set to be announced later this month.
The Practical Nursing Program at SCC has garnered regional and national acclaim, noted for its excellence in nursing education. Graduates of the program are equipped to sit for the NCLEX-PN licensing examination and practice under the supervision of registered nurses or physicians.
Joy Simpson has consistently demonstrated exceptional dedication, ranking among the top students in her class despite facing significant personal challenges over the past three semesters. Her exemplary class attendance, active participation, and outstanding academic performance highlight her commitment to her education and professional development.
In her nomination, faculty members praised her, stating, “Joy exemplifies the qualities of an outstanding adult learner – resilient, hardworking, and passionate about patient care. Her dedication to her studies and growth as a healthcare professional all points toward becoming a skilled and dedicated nurse. Joy’s professionalism, perseverance, and deep commitment to nursing will undoubtedly make her an asset to the nursing profession. We strongly and wholeheartedly recommend her for this well-deserved recognition.”
Joy expresses her gratitude towards her instructors, noting, “The instructors are fantastic, and while the program is challenging, their support is invaluable. They genuinely want to see us succeed.” Currently balancing full-time work with her studies, she states, “Yes, the program is demanding, but nursing is inherently a challenging profession. A rigorous program is essential for our growth.”
Set to graduate with a Diploma in Practical Nursing in May, Joy plans to join Lake Cumberland Urology Associates in Somerset. With 25 years of healthcare experience, she aims to pursue advanced education in nursing, following in the footsteps of her late mother, Louise Simpson, and her father, Michael Simpson, who have been her inspiration in her healthcare journey.
