From addiction to achievement: Hundley named SCC December Health Sciences Student of the Month

Somerset, KY– Amber Hundley of Jackson, a dedicated student in the Somerset Community College (SCC) Surgical Technology Program, has been named the SCC Health Sciences Division’s Student of the Month for December. With this honor, Hundley becomes a candidate for the Division’s prestigious Student of the Year Award, which will be announced in May 2026.

A 2012 graduate of Jackson County High School, Hundley has overcome significant life challenges, including addiction, and is proud to celebrate five years of recovery. Inspired by her family’s involvement in healthcare and her own experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), she decided to pursue a career in the medical field.

“After witnessing OB-C section practices during my CNA work Sait Joesph of London, I felt a strong pull to learn more and help people. Being part of a team is incredibly rewarding. After having my son, I wanted to return to school, and SCC made the process smooth and supportive.”

The SCC Surgical Technology Program equips graduates with the skills needed to support surgeons in delivering safe and effective care. Surgical Technologists play a vital role in maintaining a secure operating room, ensuring equipment functions properly, and prioritizing patient safety throughout every procedure. With high demand for skilled professionals, graduates find abundant career opportunities locally, statewide, and across the nation.

Hundley was recommended for the award by Program Director Tammy Day and Director of Clinical Education Eric Overby. “Amber exemplifies dependability and commitment. She consistently attends class and actively participates, demonstrating her dedication to her education. Despite personal obstacles, she maintains excellent attendance and engagement. Amber is highly intelligent and strives to excel in this program, which highlights her determination to succeed,” said Day.

Hundley is scheduled to graduate in May 2026 with an Associate in Applied Science (AAS) in Surgical Technology. She plans to further her education to become a First Assistant and pursue a career in the healthcare field. Hundley is the daughter of Rebecca and Scott Hundley and the mother of Kynnber and Henderson Grimes.
