A Co, 1st Battalion 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division

My Grandfather served in the Regiment made famous by the HBO mini-series “Band of Brothers”. My Mother once mentioned backpacking in Europe after high school. My Grand father replied “I backpacked all over Europe as a Teenager, and I turned out alright”. Jon Roberts- Somerset KY.

William Enlisted in the United States Army during the outset of World War II. After completing Basic Combat Training, William volunteered to serve in The Airborne. Legend has it that William read a Time Life Article mentioning that Paratroopers earned an extra $50 a month in “jump pay” and he said “where do I sign up?”. Once completing Airborne School, PFC Cline received his first nickname as other troopers referred to William as “Not Wild Bill” due to his modest mannerisms and lack of Vice. PFC Cline Participated in Airborne Operations in Normandy, France and Eindhoven, Holland. For his bravery and service, he received the Air Medal, The American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal With Valor Device. Following the War, William settled down in Des Plaines, IL where he worked as a Maintenance Manager for Cook County School System.
