Roberts named SCC Health Sciences student of the month for October

Somerset, KY– The Health Sciences Division at Somerset Community College (SCC) is proud to announce that Billy Roberts has been named the Student of the Month for October. Currently enrolled in the Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) program, Billy’s exceptional academic achievement and dedication to the community have earned him this prestigious recognition, making him a candidate for the Division’s Student of the Year Award, to be announced in May 2026.

Hailing from Yeaddiss, Billy is a 2013 graduate of Leslie County High School. Since enrolling at SCC, he has consistently excelled, earning spots on both the Dean’s and President’s Lists. He actively participates in SCC’s Physical Therapy Student Organization and has volunteered to support health screenings at the Kentucky Special Olympics. Billy is also involved with the American Physical Therapy Association and has organized successful fundraisers for the Foundation for Physical Therapy Research. Additionally, he is a proud member of the Omicron Zeta Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.

Roberts balances life as a husband and father with attaining his degree at SCC. He is the son of Billy and Tilda Roberts of Yeaddiss and is married to Courtney, with whom he has a daughter, Emberly.

The PTA program, recognized both regionally and nationally, equips graduates to work under the supervision of physical therapists in diverse settings such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, home health, rehabilitation centers, and schools. This October, the program proudly joins in celebrating National Physical Therapy Month.

Roberts was nominated for the award by Program Director Dr. Corey Moore and Director of Clinical Education Dr. Melanie Hines. Dr. Moore praised him, stating, “Billy exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding student. His hard work, leadership, and consistently positive attitude shine through in everything he does. He is not only supportive of his classmates but also deeply committed to his growth as a clinician. Billy’s enthusiasm and compassion will undoubtedly make a significant impact on his future patients.”

Reflecting on his experience, Billy shared, “The PTA program has truly been transformative for me. It challenges me to think critically, and the faculty are incredibly supportive in helping students grasp complex concepts. I wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone interested in this field.”

Thanks to the Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship, which assists Kentucky residents with tuition in high-demand fields as they earn certificates, diplomas or associate degrees, Roberts’ studies have been mostly funded by this scholarship, allowing him to focus on his studies and not worry as much about funding his education.

Roberts is set to graduate in May 2026 from SCC. He aspires to further his education, aiming for a Doctorate in physical therapy.
