SCC’s Alicia Stigall joins the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology to promote quality education and client care

Somerset, KY– Alicia Stigall, an instructor at the Somerset Community College (SCC) Somerset Campus, has been appointed to the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology. In this role, she will help establish guidelines for the state, focusing on promoting health, equality in education, and high-quality safe care for clients.

Stigall began her cosmetology journey as a student at SCC in 2012 and has been practicing as a licensed cosmetologist in the Commonwealth since completing her training. She has gained experience working in salons and has served as both artistic director and district manager for the popular Regis Salon. After becoming a mother to her nine-year-old daughter Penny, she decided to take on a different role as an entrepreneur. Family-owned, Alicia’s Beauty Spot, is in Monticello and attached to her home, allowing her to find balance in her life as a mother.

Driven by her passion for the field, she pursued her instructor license in 2019 during the COVID-19 pandemic at SCC, her alma mater, expressing that she enjoys staying active and busy. Stigall now balances her responsibilities as an instructor at SCC, mother, wife, and entrepreneur while also helping to influence the standards for cosmetologists in the state with her special knowledge in Technical Education.

“I love this industry. I always knew I wanted to be a hairdresser from an early age. I loved going into the salon when I was little and how they made me feel,” Stigall said. When I got old enough to start deciding what I wanted to do, I knew I wanted to make people feel good and now my whole life encompasses that passion. I am so blessed.”

SCC is positively impacting the cosmetology industry in Kentucky, with the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology led by Executive Director Joni Upchurch, also a former SCC instructor and alum.

Stigall had advice for those pursuing cosmetology as a career.

“Always strive to improve your skills and embrace continuous learning. Adapt to changes in the industry rather than resist them,” Stigall encouraged. “Stay updated and committed to your education and always remember your why; the reason you chose this industry. It will take you to many great places.”
